sh404SEF installation

IMPORTANT

sh404SEF default settings allows it to operate directly (youmust activate it though) on most web servers. Yet, if you want to use the .htaccess option, rather the /index.php/ option, your Joomla installation should already be compatible with URL rewriting.

Remember : if you are having difficulties with this, it is unlikely to be a joomla problem, but most likely something related to your server setup. For instance, many times, you will be faced with 404 errors or Internal server errors 500 display. This indicates that there is something in your .htacces file that is not compatible with your apache server setup.

if you face this kind of errors, I will suggest you contact your hosting company for assistance.  If your .htaccess is not compatible with your apache server, or hosting company, there is no point in trying to use sh404SEF - or any other similar component like ARTIO Joomsef, OpenSEF or Advanced SEF - as they will simply not work. You will have first to fix your installation, paying particular attention to the existence and the content of your .htaccess file.

You will find more information regading .htacces in the dedicated .htacces information page available from the documentation menu

Installation

  • Be aware that only ONE SEF component can be installed at any time. So if you already have OpenSEF, Artio Joomsef or SEF Advance, you must uninstall them before you install sh404SEF. Joomla own standard SEF system is OK, meaning you don't have to try unsinstall it (you could not, even if you tried!)
  • Install the component the usual way, using Joomla installer, found under the Installation menu in the backend
  • Go to sh404SEF control panel, found under the Components / sh404SEF menu
  • Click on the sh404SEF configuration icon in the control panel
  • Set the first optio, Enabled, to Yes
  • Review any parameter you may want to change, then click on the Save button
  • From version 1.3 RC onward, there is a dual-level user interface. Click on the "Display extended interface", on the main Control panel, to view all available parameters
  • Ensure that SEF is enabled under Global Configuration in the Joomla backend

After installation

  • If you plan to have sh404SEF manage page titles and meta tags, you must publish the shCustomTags module that was automatically installed together with sh404SEF. You must also choose a proper publication position (left, right, top, etc). Please review the module documentation for more information
