Upgrading sh404SEF from previous version

Important information regarding upgrades

From version t, sh404SEF has a fully transparent upgrade mechanism, which means that upgrading is :

  • set your site off-line  (Joomla General site configuration)
  • uninstall sh404SEF (using Joomla component installer)
  • install the new version (you must download it before!)
  • set your site back on line (Joomla General site configuration)

through these operations, all components settings will be preserved, but also:

  • the SEF URL database
  • the custom SEF URL database
  • all custom Title and Meta tags
  • shCustomTags and shJoomfish parameters and publication position. They'll be reinstalled autoamtically where they were

It means that upgrading sh404SEF is only matter of minutes. I still recommend putting your site offline, to avoid 404 pages to your visitors during that minute of upgrade

Upgrading from version 1.2.4.s and lower to t version or higher

Automatic transfer of all information is not possible for these older versions. Only custom URL can be transferred (version 1.2.4.s can only transfer sh404SEF parameters automatically). To transfer custom URL, please do as follow:

  • BEFORE uninstalling old version, and IF you have custom SEF URL, go to the custom URL screen
  • Click on Import/export redirections
  • On next screen, click on "Save your custom redirects"
  • You'll soon be prompted to save the export file to your computer. Do so.
  • Uninstall sh404SEF old version. Before you do that though, make a note of all your settings! (not needed if you have 1.2.4.s, which will preserve all settings - but not SEF URL!)
  • Uninstall shJoomfish (even if your site does not have Joomfish). Before you do that, please make a not of all the module settings.
  • Uninstall shCustomTags (even if you don't use it). Before you do that, please make a note of all the module settings.

  • Install the new version : this new version includes the component, but will also take care of installing both modules. So you'll have only one thing to install.
  • Please read the help screen displayed right after installation has been completed. It has all information required to go further
  • Go to your site module lists, and enter again all settings for shJoomfish et shCustomtags, if you whish to use them. If not, don't touch them, they are not published and won't hurt anything
  • Go to sh404SEF configuration screen and adjusts all settings as they were before.

NB: if you were using 1.2.4.s, this is already done for your by the installation software.

  • Save settings, and answer either OK or cancel when prompted to clear the URL database. It is empty, anyway.

  • IF you had custom URLs, now is the time to put them back in
  • Go back to the Custom URL screen, then Import/export redirection
  • Use the "Browse..." button to select the previously saved file containing your custom SEF URL
  • Click on the Import custom URL button

  • Last stage : you must recreate your SEF URL database. You have to browse the pages of your site, starting on your homepage. Rather than clicking on each link manually, I suggest you use a sitemap software to do it for you:
    • you can install a joomla component such as Joomap, which will create a sitemap that can be displayed on your site. To build this sitemap, it will automatically browse pretty much all your site
    • likewise, you can use a PC based software such as GSiteCrawler, a free softwre for Windows
    • or use an online Sitemap tool for the same purpose.
